On Army Hospital Corps

The measure to ensure this humane and early relief now more or less introduced into all civilized armies is the formation of an Army Hospital Corps. The modern principle for the medical service of an army in the field is to separate the sick and wounded from the moving force, and to isolate and distribute them in places of safety. Improved means and rapidity of carriage, and increased knowledge as to what was due for the preservation of health to the healthy, and aid to the sick, has caused the gradual introduction of this system. The older principle was the practice of conveying the sick and wounded in company with the moving force : for this a large ambulance transport was necessary. The German medical service is now entirely conducted on the former principle, while, (is for as Cfin he gathered from the recent details of the medical service of an English Army Corps, the latter principle, which was the course pursued in the Peninsular war, would still appear to be more or less thought of. In the Sikh and Punjab compaigns in India arrangements for the sick and wounded were made on both principles. Special arrangements have always been made for the little wars since excluding, of course, the mutiny campaign, where Medical Officers had to act for the best according to circumstances. Germany is as yet the only nation that has developed the modern principle on a regular system in a sufficient manner, and has organized, on a military basis, an hospital corps for immediate attention to the wounded on the field, and adequate assistance to them, and to the sick of the army subsequently. Organization was begun on these heads before the Danish war of 1864; it was improved during the Austrian campaign of 1866; and was brought up to a higher standard before the Franco-German war of 1870; while deficiencies, which were then found to exist, have since been brought up to the highest standard yet attained, and which, it is believed, will now prove sufficient, with the assistance of outside help, for any emergency.
